My mom flew into LA to celebrate her birthday and I couldn't be more happier. This was my mom's second time visiting Los Angeles and it was exactly a year ago from this visit. Before my mom flew in she mentioned wanting to hike the Hollywood sign and hitting up Geoffrey's in Malibu for dinner, she really wanted to squeeze in a day trip to San Francisco but timing wasn't in our favor to add that to our itinerary last minute. Luckily when my mom landed the weather was perrr-fecccct, an 80 degree day in LA type of perfect. We ate, drank, and hiked our way through LA and here's how you can too . . .

Where To Eat & Drink

  • Messob Ethiopian Restaurant - My mom never tried Ethiopian food and really wanted to try it while she was in LA. Messob was featured on HBO's hit show "Insecure" and a friend of mine raved about this spot. I found the food to be good and definitely flavorful, the service was great, and the atmosphere was super cute and culturally festive. We ordered the vegetarian platter with the awazee tibbs.
  • Mama Shelter in Hollywood - After eating lunch at Messob we headed to Mama Shelter rooftop so mama Sweet could meet two of my close LA friends, Rocky and Courtney. . . and to grab drinks of course. I love Mama's Shelter it a hidden gem as I find that most people have no clue that this boutique hotel with a gorgeous rooftop exist. But, as much as I love this place I advise you not to get the wings!

  • Ocean Prime Beverly Hills - My mother and I LOVE this place and it was our first time here but I have been wanting to try Ocean Prime out for about a year now so this was the perfect occasion to do so. First off, the service here is impeccable and I would say beyond 5 Stars, the food was delicious and it was actually one of the best steaks I've had. We were celebrating my mother's birthday and the waiter had the singers who were providing a live performance for the restaurant come to our table and personally sing happy birthday to my mom, it was such a thoughtful and sweet gesture as well as our desserts being on the house. We ordered a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, my mom had the shrimp cocktail as her appetizer, I ordered the 6oz fillet mignon, my mom had the surf and turf, and we had the broccoli with a side of lobster mash potatoes to share. The ten layer carrot cake was also to die for!

Red's Flavor Table - Now, the food is delicious here but the service is horrible so I would recommend ordering ahead and picking up to-go if you're a local in Los Angeles. Both my mom and I enjoyed our food but definitely would not dine here again. We ordered a table full of food so that we could taste a little bit of everything. This is definitely a comfort food spot so this is a "cheat day" type of spot, hence the shrimp and grits with the peach cobbler french toast, and the hot sausage link platter with crispy breakfast potatoes and scrambled eggs.  . .yep!

Geoffrey's Malibu - This is where we celebrated my mom's actual birthday and it was the perfect evening. We sat outside so that we could watch the sunset on Malibu beach while we ate dinner and celebrated my mom's special day. We ordered a rounds of the Moët Imperial cocktails and the spicy fried oysters to start. My mom ordered the chicken which was delicious and I ended up having steak again, I wanted to try the seafood paella but it had pork in it. The service here was good and they even give you plush blankets if you find yourself getting chilly from the ocean breeze.

What to Do

  • So obviously we ate a ton, but we also hiked the Hollywood sign the morning after a day of day drinking on a rooftop in Hollywood. I've hiked Runyon more than a few times and that was my mom's first hike ever when she visited me so hiking the Hollywood sign was a first for the both of us. Parking is a nightmare so try to do this hike early especially if you're going on a weekend, the walk to get to the trail is a hike before the actual hike so be prepared for that depending on how far you parked. The views were amazing and I am so grateful my mom and I got to experience that together, it made for the perfect Saturday. You can also horseback ride the trail as well and the closet you can get is behind the Hollywood sign (it's gated).
  • Lifehouse Tonics + Elixirs - After our hike we stopped by Lifehouse Tonics + Elixirs on Sunset, this place is definitely a treat as their smoothies start off at $12. The space is super cute and there's a bench outside where you can sit and people watch right on Sunset Blvd.
